A LIFE Review

Title: A Life
AKA: A Life: A Love
Genre: Medical, Romance
Episodes: 10
Broadcast period: 2017-Jan to 2017-Mar
Cast: Kimura Takuya, Takeuchi Yuko, Matsuyama Kenichi and Kimura Fumino.

Okita Kazuaki (Kimura Takuya) is a well-known surgeon working in Seattle. He is called back to Japan to do a surgery on his old mentor and chief, who is the father of his ex-girlfriend Danjo Mifuyu (Takeuchi Yuko). Having left Japan suddenly 10 years ago, he and Mifuyu hadn’t had time to work on their relationship, so she had decided to accept a proposal from Masao (Asano Tadanobu), Kazuaki’s best friend.
After returning and finishing the surgery, Kazuaki can’t wait to go back, but is asked to stay by Masao. He is asked to stay to do a brain surgery on Mifuyu, as Masao himself believes he is unable to do surgery on a loved one. So, he asks Kazuaki to do it, since he doesn’t have feelings for Mifuyu anymore… or does he?

Okay, I had the hardest time writing this summary. After watching 10 episodes I realized that the main plot and storyline really does not look good on the screen. I don’t really understand what the purpose or where supposed growth in Kimuras character went? I thought he was a main character, but he felt like an overrated second lead. I don’t understand what the meaning of this drama is? I get that the acting was good, but I felt no evolving story. They tried to make it “interesting”, but I felt it was rather an unnecessary story to be told. Ive seen movies and dramas that work at a much slower pace, with less story, and yet I am so disappointed in this drama that not even the acting could make me recommend it.
I can’t even explain my ratings. I guess the only thing I can say is watch it, and judge for yourself.

I'm Home Review

Title: I’m Home
Genre: Family, Drama, Suspense, Mystery
Episodes: 10
Broadcast period: 2015-Apr to 2015-Jun
Cast: Kimura Takuya, Ueto Aya, Tanaka Kei and Mizuno Miki

“About half a year ago, I was in an accident. I lost nearly 5 years of memories. Everything is a blur. But there is one thing for certain. My wife and kid's faces seems to be wearing masks in my eyes.” (intro)
After an accident, Ieji Hisashi (Kimura Takuya) wakes ups with partial amnesia unable to remember the past 5 years of his life. While spending 6 months in recovery, he finds out that the woman he used to be married to is his ex-wife and that he got re-married to Ieji Megumi (Ueto Aya) and they now have a son. To make matters worse he us unable to see the faces of his wife and child: he sees them wearing masks. After losing the top position at his job and being demoted, he finds himself unable to get his life back without his memories.
In his possession, he had a bundle of 10 keys, which he has no idea whom they belong – so he decides to trace back his memories and return the keys, unknowingly that his life isn't as simple as it looks...

Hmm, I am not sure I got the real suspense explained in the summary, but if you watch the first 10 minutes of this drama you’ll understand it immediately.
This drama is what me and Jenji call “A Takuya Drama”, meaning it is perfect for him and he just makes the character his, so you will be amazed no matter what. The thing about this is that he only appears once a year with a drama, and every time he does he either makes a “what is this” or a “dear God yes” types. So, having him do a “Takuya Drama” is very nice to experience. I have personally loved Ueta Aya since her first dramas, so having her in the role as a mother/house mother is quite the difference – and opposite Takuya even better. The only thing I was annoyed about was that they weren’t great in hiding the actress’s pregnancy. I mean I could see her bump - even if they tried with ‘movie magic’ to make it look like she’s not, I could tell (blame that on my years of TV watching). But the general audience wouldn’t necessarily notice.
The drama was great to watch, and very enjoyable. I felt his frustration and hers – and I liked how everything made sense at the end. So, this drama I most defiantly would call a great drama with a good story and superb acting.

Ando Lloyd Review

Title: Ando Lloyd
Tagline: A.I. knows LOVE?
Genre: Sci-fi, Futuristic, Romance
Episodes: 10
Broadcast period: 2103-Oct to 2013-Dec
Cast: Kimura Takuya, Shibasaki Kou, Oshima Yuko, Kiritani Kenta, Honda Tsubasa and Endo Kenichi.

Matsushima Reiji (Kimura Takuya) is mathematical genius with a bit of an awkward stance. He works as a professor at a college with his younger sister who is equally brilliant as he, as his assistant professor. After meeting his girlfriend Ando Asahi (Shibasaki Kou) while playing Shogi online, the two fall deeply in love and decide to get married. All this changes when Reiji one day notices that a fellow researcher dies in what seems to be an accident, but Reiji firmly tells his sister that he is next in line, as he has found a list circulating online of people who will die: and he is next on the list. Reiji leaves the office in order to save the next one on the list after him: Asahi. He calls Asahi and declares his love for her, which confuses Asahi, especially when someone calls her right after. This makes Asahi suspicious and she leaves to check his office, where Reiji’s sister tells her about the list. Shortly after Reiji’s announced as missing and presumed dead, while in fact he had been murdered.
Unaware of this, Asahi is heartbroken and the next morning is pushed on the train rails by the same murderer that killed Reiji, but is saved by someone looking exactly like Reiji, yet is completely different than him. He introduces himself as an Android from the future with the mission of saving her from the same people, or in this case androids that killed Reiji. Now the questions remain why was Reiji killed, and why do they want to kill Asahi?

Okay I guess I spoilt a bit of the first episode, sorry.
This drama is not what I has expected: I kind of thought it would be a Kimura Takuya version of Absolute Boyfriend which is why it took me 3 years to begin watching, but it kind of reminded me of Terminator.
Anyhow usually a recipe for a good Japanese drama you would need two things to make it good: 1. A good plot, and 2. Kimura Takuya. Occasionally you need a 3. which is a great cast, but most of the time Kimura is enough. So basically you have an all ingredients, including no. 3, BUT then why is not a 5 star you ask? Well, that might have to do with me having quite the standards for sci-fi/time-travel dramas. As a fan of both categories, I have one thing that I mind: love stories between robots and humans. I won’t indulge but those kinds of stories make me uncomfortable. Also the plot kind of felt dumb at the end… I need a decent explanation for it – I really didn’t understand how feelings/emotions can become particles, and not to mention something that connects the future as well as makes people send emails, or whatever… But I guess that is Japan for you, not everything has to make sense.
Other than that, this drama is really thrilling, and I would recommend it to action and sci-fi lovers.

HERO 2 Review

Title: Hero 2
Genre: Legal, Crime
Episodes: 11
Broadcast period: 2014-Jul to 2014-Sep
Cast: Kimura Takuya, Kitagawa Keiko, Sugimoto Tetta, Hamada Gaku and Masana Bokuzo.

Kuryu Kohei (Kimura Takuya) has returned to the Josai branch after once again being transferred. This time the office has gotten new prosecutors and new paralegals except two familiar faces. As always Kohei does his usual by causing turmoil in the office, be it his clothes or his way of investigating every case in detail.
This time around his paralegal and partner is Asagi Chika (Kitagawa Keiko) a fierce yet honest woman, who does not like to waste time or beat around the bush. She is very firm and likes to keep prosecutors on track, as she believes that is what she is supposed to do. That is until she meets Kuryu who helps her understand what it is like to work at the office and what her real duty is…

Finishing the (current) last of Kuryu Kohei’s story, the second season is better than all others I have watched. Not acting wise or not cast wise, but the overall story is better now if you ask me, and kind of has a better idea of what it’s like being in the office as a prosecutor - also in court. The thing that struck me both in the first season and the movie, which is also mentioned in season 2, is that the prosecutors are seen as bad in Japan: way different here where I live where the defense lawyers are seen as the bad guys.
Kimura as always does his job as Kuryu flawlessly and having Keiko on the cast makes it even better. The rest are quite brilliant as well, which I have no objections to.
All in all a great second season, and great cast.

HERO Movie Review

Title: Hero
Genre: Legal, Crime
Broadcast date: September 8, 2007
Origin:  Japan
Cast: Kimura Takuya, Matsu Takako, Abe Hiroshi, Lee Byung Hun, Otsuka Nene, Katsumura Masanou, Kohinata Fumiyo, Yashima Norito and Ayase Haruka.

After the entire incident with the Kimura family on Yamaguchi Island, Kuryu Kohei (Kimura Takuya) returns to the Josai branch in Tokyo, and teams up with his former colleagues and former paralegal Amamiya Maiko (Matsu Takako) who is not forgiving Kohei for not keeping his promises to her.
When homicide case lands on Kuryus desk after another prosecutor has personal business to take care of, Kuryu is shocked when the accused pleads not guilty after having plead guilty before. That being a common thing for prosecutors they decides to not think too much of it, but soon they find out that there is so much more going on behind the homicide. And for some reason the secretary of a former minister is helping the accused…

Compared to the drama and the special the movie has a bigger focus on actual court room situations, which happens after indication of suspects. And to be honest it kind of gives a better idea of how capacious a prosecutor’s work actually is. Also compared to the other cases this one is kind of a bigger scale type of case, and involves all the prosecutors, which yeah we do see in the drama and special, but here it really goes all the way, and I like that the original cast is in it. Besides that I would’ve liked them to make it a bit faster, it really goes on a slow pace. Of course there are tense moments but there are way too many of those quiet and dull moments they could have cut out or replaced.
But all in all a good movie that you could watch with ease…

HERO SP Review

Title: Hero SP
Genre: Legal, Crime
Broadcast date: 03 Jul 2006
Cast: Kimura Takuya, Tsutsumi Shinichi, Ayase Haruka, Suzuki Kosuke and Bengaru.

Five years after being transferred from the Josai branch, Kuryu Kohei (Kimura Takuya) is relocated to Yamaguchi: a town that is practically owned by the Kimura family. In the office he is put together with a paralegal who’s not only uptight, but is called a ‘weirdo’ by his coworkers as he rarely does anything that can be called social.
When a murder occurs in small town Yamaguchi, people are shocked to find out that the towns favorite Takida is arrested. Takida works for the Kimura family, and is liked by people more than the son of the founder. So everyone in the office refuse to take on the case as they most defiantly will be hated by the towns people for prosecuting him. The case is eventually given to Kuryu and as thorough as he is he decides to look at the case from every single angle..

Hmm, I liked it better than the drama, but that is only because they kept the originality yet had it be quite more ‘modern’. I was worried that I would be bored since the other actors weren’t there but it kind of refreshed everything and made it quite funny. Though I didn’t expect that kind of outcome of the SP, I have to admit I was entertained most of the time. So kind of worth it, and if you have watched the drama, the SP is kind of a must in this.
All in all, quite good.

HERO Review

Title: Hero
Genre: Legal, Crime
Episodes: 11
Broadcast period: 2001-Jan to 2001-Mar
Cast: Kimura Takuya, Mastu Takako, Otsuka Nene, Abe Hiroshi, Katsumura Masanou, Kohinata Fumiyo and Yashima Norito.

Once a high school dropout, Prosecutor Kuryu Kaohei (Kimura Takuya) is assigned the Josai Bureau in Tokyo. He is a different kind of prosecutor as he takes his time to evaluate every case until the very last minute, and doesn’t seem to differentiate in cases: be it a murder case or being it a theft case. In his eyes all cases are of equal importance. He is paired up with a paralegal, Amamiya Maiko (Mastu Takako), who is the complete opposite. She dreams of becoming a prosecutor, even volunteers to help Kuryu so that she’ll get better points from her boss. At first she finds him repulsive and lazy, but as time passes she notices how diligent and observing he is, and starts to admire him.
Together with the other prosecutors and paralegals they encounter different, often absurd, people, and deal with them as well as their own family and love lives.

Okay so this drama is one old drama, with an extremely young cast that I today know as the ‘oldies’ of jdorama. I’m not only talking about Kimura Takuya but every other cast member that I know as old actors - who were then pretty young, and with black hair. I never really wanted to watch it; one because Jenji said she was unable to finish even episode one. And two, well it’s from 2001.. That is 13 years ago!
BUT I have to admit, it is really a classic. Ones you get used to the way the camera shoots, you will sort of like it. It has the typical ‘awkward humor’ with the long silence and long stare, which at the beginning I kind of felt boring, but ones you get a hang of the ideal, you kind of can’t stop laughing. And yes it most defiantly is a classic.
I liked the storyline(s) and every character, and I completely understand the huge ratings! So! To watch and not to watch? I would recommend it for Takuya fans and for classic drama lovers. But if you can’t deal with old dramas, this probably shouldn’t be your choice.

Priceless Review

Title: Priceless
Genre: comedy
Episodes: 10
Broadcast period: 2012-Oct-22 to 2012-Dec-24
Cast: Kimura Takuya, Nakai Kiichi, Karina, Fujigaya Taisuke, Renbutsu Misako, Masu Takeshi, Maeda Oshiro, Tanaka Kanau, Nakamura Atsuo, Issey Ogata, Natsuki Mari, Fujiki Naohito …

Kindaichi Fumio (Kimura Takuya) is company worker who earns good money and spends it. In his opinion you should use the money you have on things that make you happy instead of keeping them locked up in a safe. One day he is suddenly fired from his company, he is accused of selling information, somebody plotted this against him, that somebody is the new chairman who for some reason tries to keep Kindaichi far away from the company. As Kindaichi is on his way home with all his stuff from the office, just as he arrives in front of his apartment he sees his home explode! Now without any job, savings and no home, he is forced to spend the night in the park just as other poor people. The next morning he meets two kids who teach him how to get by without money, and they take him to their home, where he starts renting a room for 500 yen per day. Now he has to find a way to get 500 yen every single day, money he used to think was nothing.

Ahhh yes, this is Kimura Takuya, this is his work, his acting, making you love the character. Never fails. I really loved this drama, it shows that, having the will, talent and never giving up can make you go from bottom to top with just hard work. I liked Takuya’s character and the way he worked and actually I liked that it wasn’t the story where the character gets this revelation and changes because something bad happened in their life, but he stayed the same and just worked harder. I think it would be too typical otherwise and something we see too often. This is more.. normal kind of. Except it really takes talent to think and work like Kindaichi. Getting contacts easily and befriending everybody. But I liked how.. hmm.. Not complicated his thinking was. He was thinking about repaying those who have given something to him, or helping ordinary people without thinking of them paying back. Whereas the other characters actually did change a whole lot and went through a transformation. Aaaaanyway back to the point. A really nice short drama, I recommend it, I enjoyed it, wonderful acting by Kimura Takuya. Yokshi, this is Kimura Takuya.

Bunji's verdict

This is a good drama, like good good, not good great. It’s funny, interesting, and very new, but somehow it just has a boring factor to it. Kimura Takuya is and has always been a great actor, and you can see it in the drama. Though I have to admit that I was disappointed: The drama’s good points is the way everyone is portrayed and how they grow (if you watch Japanese dramas you should know that it’s actually a key factor for that to happen), but somehow, nothing really happens. Yeah the lead suddenly gets poor, and learns the value of 500 yen, but that is only in episode one. The rest of the episodes are about the supposed ‘growth’ that doesn’t really happen. And the ending was anti-climax if you ask me. Like pretty dull, you would hope for just a bit more of excitement…. But it’s not bad. I can’t really explain it. “A good drama, but just not thrilling” would be the best way to explain it..

Tsuki no Koibito Review

Title: Tsuki no Koibito
AKA: Moon Lovers
Genre: Romance
Episodes: 8
Broadcast period: 2010-May to 2010-July
Cast: Kimura Takuya, Shinohara Ryoko, Lin Chi Ling, Matsuda Shota and Kitagawa Keiko

As the representative director of Regolith, a furniture designing company, Hanzuki Rensuke (Kimura Takuya) has become a cold-hearted and only has eyes for business. One day, as he ordered to shut down a factory in China, he meets a Chinese girl Liu Xiu Mei (Lin Chi Ling), and makes her a spokes model for his company. At first Xiu Mei is against it, but as he promises to let the workers of the factory work in his factory, she agrees. Back home, Rensukes best friend and most trustworthy companion, Ninomiya Maemi (Shinohara Ryoko), works as designer in Regolith, and is quite fed up with Rensuke using her as he pleases, but she simply can’t say no to him. When Xiu Mei comes to Regolith, he tells Maemi to make the ‘non-model’ Xiu Mei, into a covergirl. Rensuke’s right-hand-man Kazami Sai(Matsuda Shota), tries to woo Maemi, who seems to have someone else in her heart.
The top-model and woman who has the current crush for Rensuke, Ozaki Yuzuki (Kitagawa Keiko), hears about this new ‘flame’ of Rensuke, and decides to make life hard on Xiu Mei, much to the annoyance of Maemi.
As the two worlds of Rensuke and Xiu Mei collide, love blossoms, and Rensuke’s dream and world happens to go downhill, as problems arise..

A new record! A jump of 2 stars!! I started this drama with an interest, well mainly because of the Kimura & Shinohara pairing, like can you say AMAZING? But the drama goes on with the “transformation” for around six episodes, where the last two was the wakeup call, and that is long if you wait several weeks for each episode. But the ending and the two last episodes are pretty good, and I guess when you expected to make 11 episodes, and are told to reduce it to 8, you have a lot of loopholes and ALOT of explaining to do, which I think they did pretty well, considering.
Kimura’s acting is as usual well, but the star in this drama was Shinohara, aswell at Keiko, like great!
All in all, love it!

Good Luck! Review

Title: Good Luck!
Genre: Flight, Romance
Episodes: 10
Broadcast period: 2003-Jan to 2003-Mar
Theme song: Ride on Time by Yamashita Tatsuro
Cast: Kimura Takuya, Tsutsumi Shinichi, Shibasaki Kou, Uchiyama Rina, Kaname Jun, Danta Yasunori and Kuroki Hitomi.

Having achieved his life-long dream of being a pilot, Shinkai Hajime (Kimura Takuya) is now working to become a captain. Being targeted by Captain Koda Kazuki (Tsutsumi Shinichi) for "lack of diciplin", he starts a personal war against him. To complicate matters, he begins a relationship with stubborn and straight-talking mechanic, Ogawa Ayumi (Shibasaki Kou), whose familu is against her being a mechanic.

Yeah, I know, short resume, probably my shortest ever, and yeah, some of it taken from Wiki.D-addicts, but if you see this drama you'll understand. It's not complicated, actually simple, but nothing much happens, besides the last 3 episodes, which are good. The drama focuses on airplanes, and pilots, yeah, I started to REALLY respect them, but the story goes on in circles. Kimura is brilliant as allways, but the female lead, was dull. Okay, they look great together, but thats it.
Watch it if you want some good acting and of you wonder what a pilot, a CA (Cabin Attendant - Stewardess) and a Mechanic does..

Engine Review

Title: Engine
Genre: Family, Comedy, Romance
Episodes: 11
Broadcast period: 2005-Apr to 2005-Jun
Theme song: I Can See Clearly Now by Jimmy Cliff
Insert song: Angel by Aerosmith
Cast: Kimura Takuya, Koyuki, Toda Erika, Ueno Juri, Nakajima Yuto and Arioka Daiki.

After being kicked out of the Italian race team, Kanzaki Jiro (Kimura Takuya) returns to Japan, to re-join the japanese race team. As he returns home, he finds out that his father has made the house where he had grown up in, to a orphanage, and the fact that he hates children doesnt help him with the fact that he is to live with them. Being a orphan himself, before he was adopted by his father, he feels with the children and accepts living there. Taking care of the children are a teacher, Mizukoshi Tomomi (Koyuki), a male nurse, a cook, his father and his older sister.
As he is rejected by the coach of the japanese race team, and he tries to solve the issues of his dream, he gets tangled up with Tomomi-sensei, and the 12 children; he learns from them, and they learn from him..

Hmm, looooove this one!! Instead of a high-school teacher being the one helping the students, it's a racer helping orphans or children that aren't being helped. I loved it, all of it. Loved Kimuras acting, him pairing up with Koyuki, who by the way looks stunning with him, the oldest and wisest of the children Ueno Juri, the over the top loud girl Toda Erika, the smart ass Nakajima Yuto, the overprotecting brother Arioka Daiki, the deliquent Ishida Hoshi and all the ADORABLE children! Gossh, I watched it several times. Thuss the ending was to sudden and we didnt really see how the ending happend (trying not to spoil), and the "what-happend-in-the-future-speech" was unnessesary. But I still loved it, and made me wanna start a orphanage myself, hehe.. *dreams of a japanese orphanage*

Jenji's verdict
Okay. Kimura Takuya is... AMAZING. I cant believe it. He is sooooo guuuuuuuuud !!!! Ive had the drama on my pc for a while now and thn i watched it and im like "WHT HAVE I BEEN WAITING FOR" . Seriously there arent many of these kind of dramas. Those that give u such strong,, feelings. Like its a really nice story and i love that its an orphanage thats so cool, i mean its sad. But i think orphan kids are cool. Not that its cool to be orphan. I mean. Orphans are special and should be treated right. They should get all the support possible from people around them. And i loved the way Jiro handled them. Like anyone else he would. Like he so straightforward and i think that is why the kids love him. Seriously that guy he so cool. And the drama is okay realistic.. sometimes in dramas they kinda overdo it so you think "yeaa right as if tht would ever happen" but here they are okay.

Pride Review

Title: Pride
Genre: Sports, Romance
Episodes: 11
Broadcast period: 2004-Jan to 2004-Mar
Theme song: I was born to love you by Queen
Cast: Kimura Takuya, Takeuchi Yuko, Sakaguchi Kenji, Ichikawa Somegoro, Nakagoshi Noriko and Megumi.

This story revolves around Halu (Kimura Takuya), a professional ice-hockey player with a "playa" attitude. He believes that women are "pieces", in a game, and doesn't believe in love due to some sort of mother complex.
He meets Aki (Takeuchi Yuko), a typical OL (office lady), who has been waiting for her boyfriend to return from America. Due to a promise she made with him, she doesn't want to have any relationships, eventhough she has not heard from the boyfriend for 2 years.
The two of them meet, become friends, but as they feel more and more comfortable with one another, they decide to make a game. The rules are simple: they date, more as a emotional help, where Halu is Aki's "Replacement Lover" and Aki is Halu's "Mama". But matters become confusing as they start to fall for one another, and Aki's boyfriend returns to Japan..

First things first, I have fallen in love with Kimura Takuya. Second, this drama is absolutly amazing - acted by him! Lols, yeah the drama was good also :P The simple "i love you" isn't enough apperently, it goes all the way to the ice-hockey feild, or stage, or whatever it was called. I haven't watched many of Kimura's dramas, actually only one, but he is TOTALLY a johnney, and I can see where alot of his koihei's are getting their inspiration from. I saw Yamapi, Jin and Kame in him! I also liked the way the women were potraid in this drama, even tough I don't like OL's and "kyaa kyaa" girls. But they were pretty cool, expecially her friend Chika.. Sugee Onna! All in all, amazing actor and superb storyline + lovestory.
