Dr. Frost Review

Title: Dr. Frost
AKA: Doctor Frost
Genre: Crime, thriller
Episodes: 10
Broadcast Period: Nov-2014 to Feb-2015
Cast: Song Chang Ui, Jung Eun Chae, Sung Ji Roo, Lee yoon Ji, Choi Jung Woo, Lee Hi Jin, Yoon Jung Hoon,

A psychological thriller about a professor (Song Chang Ui) in the field of psychology who are regarded as a genius, he cannot feel certain emotions due to an injury he sustained as a child. Yon Sung Ah (Jung Eun Chae) gets appointed as his assistant, and start counselling sessions at the university. Because of some mystery deaths, together they start solving crimes for the police department that leads to some psychological disorders. While they solve these crimes their past mysteries begins to surface.

I’m very interested in psychology, so this drama was like sent from heaven to me, and especially happy about that it was OCN that picked it up and not another broadcast company. OCN really knows how to make their original dramas. I really liked this drama, the suspense, mystery and the various psychology disorders that were shown, were all very interesting. I had to read about some of the diseases after every episodes. The only thing is that 10 episodes were just not enough! I felt like they started something but never really finished it, all the characters were incomplete, they all had interesting backgrounds, but they never really did anything about it. Although every OCN drama ends at a cliffhanger, you can’t do anything but anticipate a second season, (please! *crossing fingers*). The cast although didn’t really leave any impression, some of them were familiar but some were new faces for me. I don’t know what to think of Song Chang Ui, he did a good job with his "no-emotion" character as Dr. Frost, but I can't say that his acting was extraordinary. Sometimes he just can't convince me about Frost's coldness and emotionless. Let us not talk about Dr. Frosts assistant, I really didn’t like her. But all the other actors were good, especially the patients in all the cases in every episode. It’s a nice drama, it suits a nice rainy Sunday were you just want to be home.

Bunji's Verdict
Another OCN drama on the forget list. I am quite disappointed in these dramas lately, and it takes quite a lot of energy not to enjoy psychology crime dramas. I know I was upset about Reset, but I am also quite upset with Dr. Frost because of the same reason: it really is boring. I am a huge fan of psychological/behavior analysis dramas. So much that I actually started studying psychology on my own, and there is one thing I gotta say (as a psychology enthusiast): there is no way in hell so many unique mental disorders are in the same town/city, and let alone all be witnessed by the same physician. You might disagree and say that mental illnesses are quite common, more than we already know, and yes true, but the ones introduced in the drama are as rare as catching Ebola. I mean they are mainly textbook illnesses that do happen, but for few people spread out all over. Then again, it is a drama – and it has to be interesting I guess.
The actors were okay, not that they really were able to use their potential as this drama is written very weakly and the same goes to the screenplay. But they manage, and make it watchable to a degree in in with made me finish all 10 episodes. The drama as a whole was too slow and not that enjoyable.
All in all a okay/watchable drama, with decent actors – though bit boring plot.

My Secret Hotel Review

Title: My Secret Hotel
Genre: Romantic, Mystery, Comedy
Episode: 16
Broadcast period: 2014-Aug to 2014-Oct
Cast: Yoo In Na, Nam Goong Min, Jin Yi Han, Choi Jung Woo, Uhm Soo Jong, Kim Bo Mi, Choi Tae Hwan, Lee Young Eun, Go Yoon Ho,

Nam Sang Hyo (Yoo In Na) and Goo Hae Young (Jin Yi Han) were married in less than 3 months and got divorced, they meet again 7 years later. Nam Sang Hyo works at The Secret Hotel as a wedding planner, where she by mistake starts a rumor that if a couple marry at that hotel they will divorce after 3 months. To kill the rumor she have to plan the perfect wedding, the only problem was that the groom happened to be her ex-husband, and a dead body falls down from the ceiling in the middle of the wedding. Things got complicated when everyone get sucked into a murder case at The Secret Hotel, so how will Nam Sang Hyo save the hotel?

Ok so, since I am extremely emotionally distressed right now, after watching this drama, I will try my best to give an honest opinion of this show. This was a pretty typical romantic comedy with a little murder mystery thrown in. It was cute and had seasoned actors in the lead roles, and apparently it was written by a famous screenwriter in Korea just before she died, therefor it was expected to be a success. But in the end, it just didn’t do it for me (and the rest of Korea I guess, since the ratings were really bad), there were too many twists and holes in the drama, and you think something new will be revealed episode after episode, but nope, it will slowly drain you for energy. There was a lot of time where I just wanted to give up, because it felt like it was stuck, but the chemistry between Nam Sang Hyo and Goo Hae Young was so cute I had to finish it (have you heard his voice before; CHARISMA). Ok, to sum up what I’m trying to say is that if you have a boatload of good stuff on your “To watch” list, you can let this one on hold for a while.

God's Quiz 3 Review

Title: God’s Quiz 3
Genre: Medical, Crime, Mystery
Episodes: 12
Broadcast period: 2012-May to 2012-Aug
Cast: Ryu Duk Hwan, Ahn Nae Sang, Choi Jung Woo and Park Joo Myun.

When an alien like body is found in an abandon building, veteran detective Bae Tae Shik (Ahn Nae Sang) is put on the case as the leading detective. Arriving at the scene he meets Han Jin Woo (Ryu Duk Hwan) and the two bump heads even going as far as making a stunt on the scene. Jin Woos girlfriend and prior partner Detective Kang left to study, so he tries to do the job of two, until he finds out who his new partner is: Detective Bae.
Complete opposites: one is depending on his knowledge and brain while the other is going with his gut and looks at the habits of the criminals. The two are forced to work together, even becoming an official team by joining the police and medical office. Somehow the two find common ground, but for some reason Jin Woos illness seems to act up, and he slowly starts to fear his own mind…

Okay, freaking scary! Like shitting my pants level! Like seriously, I can deal with ghosts, dead people heck even aliens, but damn! Having a second personality where you can’t control your body is just way out of my league! I was so freaked out that I had to take a break once in a while. *shiver*
Besides that I was a bit reluctant when I heard the detective would change, but that was until I met Bae Tae Shik and damn I am glad they added him! Made everything so much easier digest and the duo made me laugh several times. It gives the entire drama a fresher and newer feel.
Okay, spoiler much, sorry! But seriously very good!

God's Quiz 2 Review

Title: God’s Quiz 2
AKA: Wrath of God
Genre: Medical, Crime, Mystery
Episodes: 12
Broadcast period: 2011-Jun to 2011-Aug
Cast: Ryu Duk Hwan, Yoon Joo Hee, Choi Jung Woo, Lee Seol Hee, and Park Joon Myun.

After Thanatos death Han Jin Woo (Ryu Duk Hwan) moves to the countryside in order to deal with his illness and at the same time get peace and quiet in order to have the new invented drug work.
In Seoul on the other hand a mysterious killer has been leaving partial body all over the city, giving the police and Detective Kang (Yoon Joo Hee) a headache. Beause of the lack of evidence and the media hype, the police is not allowed to publish anything, which is blamed on both Detective Kang and the Hanguk Medical Center. Unable to reach Jin Won, they try to solve the mystery, but in vain, which is why the top of the police send a profiler Min Ji Yool (Lee Seol Hee) to assist the case.
After hearing that Detective Kang is targeted by everyone, Jin Woo returns to Seoul and announces that he will find the killer! At the same time Jin Woo’s mentor Jang Gyu tae (Choi Jung Woo) seems to be behind the new made drug, but for some reason doesn’t tell Jin Woo about it…

Since there are made so many season I am going to have to compare them, hope you don’t mind.
In my head I have always had this idea that all dramas that are in several layers of seasons (usually Asian dramas) give out season 1 in order to make us like the taste and when season 2 comes the entire meal is given - which I think is the perfect explanation for season 2. Compared to season 1, this season has much more ‘color’ and makes much more sense honestly. The couple also has evolved which is nice, and unusual for Korean dramas. But then again it’s OCN - probably one of the best channels ever on Korean TV.
I’m keeping low, but I have to say this: if you are considering it, watch season 1 first.. They are pretty connected.

God's Quiz Review

Title: God’s Quiz
Genre: Medical, Crime, Mystery
Episodes: 10
Broadcast period: 2010-Oct to 2010-Dec
Cast: Ryu Duk Hwan, Yoon Joo Hee, Choi Jung Woo, Ahn Yong Joon and Park Joon Myun.

“The problems that you have to solve through each case are like a quiz from God. Quizzes made so that the arrogant human won't become too proud. God made it for that purpose. But in these quizzes, God made it for that purpose. But in these quizzes, there are no hints in it. It is a question that you have to solve forever” (Intro).
Han Jin Woo (Ryu Duk Hwan) is a famous ‘genius’ doctor, known for his young age and being able to almost do any medical treatment without fail. After spending a lot of time in a hospital he finally gets his wish granted in getting to work in clinical pathology. But as it seems his boss has a different plan: he assigns him as the consulting doctor for a team of medical examiners. The team focuses on mysterious deaths, so it is a collaboration team with the police. Kang Kyung Hee (Yoon Joo Hee) is the assigned detective in this case, and is partnered up with Jin Woo, but the two are complete opposites. Together they investigate various mystery deaths…

I’m kind of surprised that I missed this one: I usually have this idea that I have watched all the good dramas. But to then again, it’s OCN - and yes they do have the best Korean crime dramas. The first thing that struck me was the visibility of the autopsies. Being a CSI fan I am kind of surprised to see these organs being cut out and split in pieces. Though it freaks you out, you get used to it, and it gives you an idea of the reality of autopsies which I by the way never saw like that. The drama generally is interesting and the cases are shocking but yet kind of heartfelt - shakes you up, which I think is the meaning of it: “Changing society” kind of feel. The couple has a pretty neat chemirty and work very well together, though I don’t know any of the actors.
All in all recommendable.

Master's Sun Review

Title: Master's sun
AKA: The Sun of My Master / The Sun of the Lord
Genre: horror, fantasy, romance, comedy
Episodes: 17
Broadcast period: 2013-Aug-07 to 2013-Oct-03
Cast: So Ji Sub, L, Gong Hyo Jin, Seo In Guk, Kim Yoo Ri, Choi Jung Woo, Kim Mi Kyung, Lee Jong Won, Park Hee Bon, Hong Eun Taek, Lee Do Hyun, Lee Jae Won, Jung Ga Eun, Kim Yong Gun, Han Bo Reum, Hwang Sun Hee . . .

Joo Joong Won (So Ji Sub) is a cold CEO who only thinks about his "Kingdom", his hotel and mall. As a young teenager (L) he had somewhat a traumatic experience, being kidnapped and watching his first love die. However things aren't exactly what they looked like, but only Joong Won knows. There is a rumour that he is under a curse, as he turns down proposals, and never has a succesful relationship. Unexpectedly, on a rainy night, fate brings him to a place out of town, where he ends up meeting a strange woman, Tae Gong Shil (Gong Hyo Jin). Tae Gong Shil had an accident, and ended up in a coma for 3 years, after she woke up she could see spirits/ghosts. Because of this somewhat unfurtunate ability, Gong Shil was forced to stay in here small rooftop apartment, disclosed from the rest of the world. Only ghosts come to visit her, because to them, she shines brightly like a sun.  Tae Gong Shil notices that ghosts do not get close to Joong Won, so she starts following him. He on the other hand does not like her nor believes in ghost, but when she tells him she can see ::::, his first love, he suddenly sees the oppertunities that lie in her ability.

I had so much fun watching So Ji Sub's character, his hand movements, which he did so much were fun to watch. Again he lives his character, very typical his acting, he becomes his character. I didn't see anything wrong with the acting of the others either. You kind of have to get used to Tae Gong Shil, not sure if it's the actress, I dont think I have watched here in a drama before. Also we had that thing again where this guy, Seo In Guk's character, thinks that he needs to protect Tae Gong Shil, and Tae Gong Shil ends up being this voulnerable girl who needs protection. That annoys me, but it's a part of her character maybe. Overall it is nice and it's not hard to watch. It had plenty of funny moments. Though it does feel like your average drama, didn't have a WOW effect, you still enjoy it since it's relaxing and not stressful.

Bunji's Verdict
After reading Jenji’s review I really didn’t want to watch this, I mean if it IS So Ji Sub, it better be WOW, but she said it wasn’t so I was afraid I’d dislike it. BUT I’m honest by saying this, I really enjoyed it. The back stories were seriously heartbreaking, and the two were just great together. I haven’t really seen Ji Sub in this kind of comedy role, but it suits him, and wow, I really had a blast. I mean sometimes it was so funny, I couldn’t stop laughing. And Gong Hyo Jin is my favorite actress, now I said it! Beside the three last episodes, which somehow felt like fillers, I have to say one of the best dramas of the year (I don’t care what Jenji says - I liked it a lot).. Also I’m crossing my fingers that these two actors get married! Hmph!
So, should you watch it? YES! I recommend it, very much so!
